The Vancouver media are clearly on to TransLink’s wasteful ways. We’ve seen multiple CKNW Waste Patrol reports, Global TV break fare evasion and other stories, The Province’s SkyTrain nepotism stories, and many, many more.

Last night, Michele Brunoro and CTV broke the story on nine TransLink executives being eligible for hundreds of thousands of dollars in performance bonuses. The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling on the TransLink Board to scrap that idea. This unhealthy, wasteful organization should not be rewarding any senior executive. Here’s 10 reasons why not:

• $232 million in lost revenue to fare evasion since 2000
• Raising gas taxes 2 cents a litre 48 hours ago—and still not being able to manage the system with 17 cents of tax revenue on every litre of gas sold
• SkyTrain hiring practices linked to nepotism
• Creating and overpaying for a Transit Police department
• Losing $150,000 to FareSaver theft because security procedures were lax
• Losing $15 million a year to U-Pass fraud
• Bribing stakeholders to fill out a survey with $100 charitable donations
• Failing to address bus driver assaults
• Studying a Burnaby Mountain gondola that didn’t have local support
• Trying to solve a $30 million shortfall with a billion dollars of new tax tools
